Social capital and rural producer organisations : an assessment of the relevancy of social capital in the functioning of rural producers organization…
2013
Master thesis in development management – University of Agder 2013 This thesis examines the relevancy of social capital in the functioning of Rural Producer Organisations (RPOs). RPOs are made up of farmers that want to improve their economic situation by facilitating access to the market or by for instance refining a product, selling certified seeds, or setting prices etc. In this paper it is investigated whether social capital is an important factor in determining participation in the RPOs. Low membership participation is a problem in the two empirical cases of RPOs in Sopachuy, Bolivia. Social capital is a concept that has received more attention the last two decades because of its perce…
The Roma people : the effects of discrimination on living standards, a case study of Kristiansand, Norway
2013
Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2013 The Roma people are one of the largest minority groups in Europe and also the least integrated one. Due to discrimination and exclusion in their home countries, many Roma choose to migrate to countries such as Norway to earn money, primarily through begging. This thesis stems from a desire to learn more about the living standards of Roma people in Kristiansand and to find out what effect long-term discrimination has had on their lives. In this thesis empirical findings from an interview based qualitative study of 24 Roma informants as well as seven representatives from the support system are presented. The support system inc…
Haydom Lutheran Hospital: a sustainable health-providing organization or a "white elephant"? : as an Xtrata CSR objective, what best practices does H…
2011
Master thesis in development management- University of Agder 2011 This paper provides an analysis of the sustainability of Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH) in Tanzania. Moreover, it discusses the local community’s dependency on the hospital. A smaller second part of the paper looks at Xstrata’s decision to use HLH as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) objective. The thesis further explores what services can be seen as best practices from HLH and therefore transferable to Xstrata’s possible mining site in Kabanga, Tanzania. HLH has since its inauguration by Norwegian missionaries in 1955 been highly funded by public and private financial, human and technological resources from abroad, esp…
The causes of and impact from deforestation on local level sustainable forest management in Ghana : a survey of Dwease and Praaso communities in the …
2013
Master thesis in development management – University of Agder 2013 The objective of this study has been to examine the causes of and the impact from deforestation and inquire into the conditions for local level sustainable forest management in Ghana. This has become necessary in the light of the fact that research and policy on deforestation has often asserted it as “evil” because of the long term environmental implication for sustainable development evident in global warming, biodiversity loss and soil degradation. While this is true, it is also undeniable that forest degradation and deforestation have contributed tremendously to the development of households’ livelihoods, income and emplo…
How cooperation between international NGOs and local youth associations influence civil society in Malawi : a case study of Plan Malawi's partnership…
2013
Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2013 There is a significant focus within development aid on the importance of civil society for democracy and development, and resources are channelled towards INGOs with the aim of them contributing to “strengthening” local civil society. The literature is however critical and inconclusive when it comes to the impact of such efforts (Riddell, 2007), and there is debate as to whether the idea of “civil society” is relevant in a developing country context (Whaites, 2000). Further, there is a lack of research on the role of youth within development and civil society, despite the fact that the global numbers of youth have reached it…

The Powerlessness of Religious Power in a Pluralist Society
2003
The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in Social compass, 50/2,2003 by SAGE Publications Ltd., All rights reserved. © http://scp.sagepub.com/ In pluralist societies adhering to liberal and individualistic ideas, strict and conservative groups face some serious dilemmas if they want to recruit and keep members. In a liberal society, the most important form of religious power is normative power. Strict and demanding religious organizations will have difficulties in a liberal, anti-authoritarian society. Such organizations may succeed in increasing their control over loyal members, but in a broader context, they will be branded as authoritarian by the secular media and …
"Omorganisering og belastning"
2013
